You can change a woman's life in Afghanistan! For only $112, you can sponsor an Afghan widow (there are currently one million) to enroll in a 3 month course offered by HOOWA, the Humanitarian Organization for Orphans and Widows of Afghanistan.
There she will learn to read and write, and how to sew traditional
handicrafts with a sewing machine. Upon graduation, she will
receive a sewing machine and a work table, enabling her to support
herself and her children. Why not give a sponsorship in someone's name, as a gift from the heart, which will mean so much more than another possession? Or perhaps your family can decide to forego some luxury and give a widow a new start in life. A group of neighbors, friends, or co-workers could pitch in a buy a sponsorship. A church group, 4-H club, Girl or Boy Scout troop could donate or raise the money to give some Afghan children the opportunity to eat every day. If you sponsor a widow, you will receive a handsome certificate, as well as an invitation to a dinner (2 tickets per sponsorship) where those who want to can have their pictures taken and write letters to the students (they will be translated into Dari). Fahima Vorgetts, our Afghan-American contact with HOOWA, will travel to Kabul, Afghanistan in January, and deliver our photos and letters. She will bring back a photo and letter from each student for their sponsor!
