9:30 a.m. to around 9 p.m.
Turkey Ridge Organic
Apple Orchard (now officially named “Midwest Organic Fruit
Growers” since it became a not-for-profit cooperative) is
hosting a day of tree planting and fertilizing on April 24. Friends
of sustainable agriculture who are interested in supporting this
fledgling coop while combating global warming, can join DOERS as we
bus together up to Turkey Ridge for a day of music, work and good
food.
9:30 a.m.
Gather at Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ parking lot, 1501
Gilbert Rd., Madison.
10 a.m. sharp:
School bus departs for Gays Mills, WI
12 noon:
Arrive at Turkey Ridge and eat your sack lunch while getting
oriented.
12:30 – 5
p.m. Help plant and fertilize apple trees. (Take as many breaks
as you need to. There is no straw boss, just friendly orchardists.)
5:15 Organic
dinner with vegetarian options is served. This free dinner will be
donated by area farms and businesses, and prepared by a volunteer
crew.
After dinner:
sing some songs, and then get on the bus to ride home.
- Bring a sack lunch, and musical instruments,
work gloves, and a shovel if you have them. And don’t forget
sunscreen, a hat, and warm clothing in case it turns colder.
- Anyone not physically able to help with the
planting will find love and appreciation in the farm kitchen,
preparing a yummy organic dinner for the hard-working hordes.
Tickets for the school bus ride will cost $11.
We have some scholarship money, so don’t let lack of funds
keep you away! Call us if money is a problem. Send your check to
DOERS, P.O. Box 259525, Madison, WI 53725-9525. Please tell us you
are coming even if you drive yourself, so that we have adequate food
for all the volunteers.
- We can’t plant in rain or
soggy ground. Check our website (www.doerswisconsin.org)
or call 223-9571 before you come if the weather leaves you doubtful.
Rain dates are Sun, April 25, and if it’s still too soggy or
wet, Sat., May 8.
