Oct. 27, 2001 Blanket collection for Afghan refugees collected and sent 711 blankets and $5500 for food.
Dec. 1, 2001 Kit collection for refugees worldwide made, stuffed and sent 456 kits (relief, health, school, newborn & sewing), 22 boxes of other items, and another 216 blankets and $1039 for Afghan refugees. A simultaneous art sale generated $1273 for RAWA, the Revolutionary Association of Women of Afghanistan.

Past Projects - 2002
May 11, 2002 Ethnic Afghan Dinner with speaker Doug Hostetter, who trucked aid into northern Afghanistan while the bombs fell, raised $5150 for seeds and tools for returning Afghan farmers. (Due to continuing drought, this money was spent instead on a prosthetics clinic in Afghanistan.)
Nov. & Dec. 2002 Holiday Handicraft Sales and Rug Raffle. Profits plus donations brought in $1690, enough to sponsor 15 Afghan widows to enroll in a 3-month course in sewing and literacy, with graduation gifts of a sewing machine and a work table.

An illustrated talk by John Foley, the director of the UW Center for Sustainability and Global Environment, entitled Global Sustainability, Local Responsibility: How to tackle global environmental challenges in your own life and make a difference, was presented at Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, 1501 Gilbert Rd, Madison. Four leaflets about the same event were created, each emphasizing a different aspect of the issue. For more details, see our February 2003 Newsletter.

Aid collection for Iraqi children at Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, 1501 Gilbert Rd, Madison. As part of the All Our Children campaign, DOERS will be collecting relief kits and school kits, making kit bags, and selling baklava, as well as accepting checks for the "All Our Children" fund. See our flyer (pdf) for this event. Details are in the letter (p. 1, p. 2, Word) being mailed to members.
Nov - Dec, 2003 DOERS undertook a fund raising project to help purchase a mobile water purification plant in the village of Abosoda, Iraq. [leaflet] This work in the Ramadi district included the following:
1) Repairs to the Compact Water Units at Ramadi Hospital which were completed by the end of October 2003. (This includes the chlorinator that was installed with AFSC.)
2) The installation of 60 km of water networks in the district serving approximately 4,000 households. This work was completed by the end of December 2003.

Sat. March 13, 6 pm DOERS hosted another delicious and educational dinner, again at Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, 1501 Gilbert Rd. It featured Haitian food cooked by Joe Duplan, a Haitian chef (and our volunteers). Melinda Miles, the Co-Director of Haiti Reborn, a project of the Quixote Center, give a talk on Reforestation in Haiti: An Upward Spiral. Sat. April 24 DOERS organized a bus trip to the Midwest Organic Fruit Growers cooperative orchard in Gays Mills for a day of planting and fertilizing apple trees, followed by a.homecooked supper at the orchard. [more]
Sun. Nov 21, 8:30 - 3:00 pm International Fair-Trade Christmas Sale at Orchard Ridge United Church of Christ, 1501 Gilbert Rd, Madison. DOERS sold books and handmade Afghan blankets, pillows and jewelry to support Afghan refugees.
